IMPORTANT NOTE! Las Vegas differs from many cities in that you can NOT legally hail a taxi from the street. A taxi must either come to your address location (hotel, store, business), or you must take one from a “Taxi Valet” at a hotel/casino. A taxi driver can actually be fined for picking up a fair from the street. Insider note: Therefore, there is little chance that you can hail a taxi from The Strip (or if one of the many police officers see you, they will stop you) – however, just off The Strip it may be possible – at your own risk – to stand by an intersection and quickly slip in a taxi.
There are 16 different taxi companies in Las Vegas. The fares are regulated and therefore, each company charges the same. The base rate starts at $3.20, then its .37 cents per minute waiting or moving in slow traffic, and $2.00 per mile calculated every 1/8 mile (.25 cents) moving en route. Taxi fare from the airport is an additional $1.20 for airport tax. To The Las Vegas Strip will be under $20 and downtown approximately $25.

Vegas Street Scene takes a drive with an Ethiopian taxi driver who talks about Crazy Vegas, Vegas marriages, divorces, and gambling. He even teaches us a couple words of his language (Amharic). For the Michael Jackson fans, there is a quick shot of an MJ impersonator on the street who looks just like Jacko himself. Very eerie.
