The Chinese New Year will be celebrated at Freemont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas from February 7th to February 9th with the Second Annual Chinese New Year in the Desert. This year’s celebration theme is the Year of the Horse, which will be marked by three days of festivities.
The festivities will begin when Las Vegas’s Mayor Goodman hosts the opening ceremonies, which will begin at 6:30 pm at the 3rd Street Stage on February 7th. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at this time. There will be a featured performance by The Desert Winds, a wind ensemble that includes over 50 professional musicians playing brass, percussion and woodwind instruments. Participants from the Las Vegas Lohan School of Shaolin will be performing an authentic dragon dance live during the festivities. The dance will be accompanied by virtual firecrackers shown on a 1,500 foot long video screen that will be suspended 90 feet above Fremont Street. An eye painting ceremony will also be held as part of the festivities and costumed performers will be making their way through the crowd.
International performances stemming from m any different cultures will be performed as part of Chinese New Year in the Desert. Vendors from all over the world will be serving up their local cuisines to those in attendance. International Vendor Village and all cultural performances will take place the first night of the event from 5-10pm. The second day of the festivities it will run from noon to 10pm and the third day it will run from noon till 9pm. There will be live concerts given during the festivities by artists such as Gloria Papin, Victoria Zhong Wei, Kevin Khoa and Henry Chuc.
The Dragon Fest Concert Series will also take place during the 2014 Chinese New Year Celebration. There will be featured performances by participants from the Philippines, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Though the performances themselves are free, tickets for VIP seating will be available at a price.
Las Vegas’s Zumba crew will be attempting to set a new record for the Guinness Book’s largest Zumba Class ever. The festivities will also include the McDonald’s Spring Festival Parade. Guests and local Clark County District school children will be able to create their own lanterns that will go on display at the Fremont Street Experience. This activity is being held in commemoration of the Lunar Lantern Festival.
